Chinese New Year and VIPKID Teacher Meetup
This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend a Chinese New Year celebration and VIPKID Teacher Meetup at the University of Richmond. It was the first meetup I’d ever been to and it was a lot of fun. I got to talk to fellow teachers, hear how they’ve been successful, and take away lots of good tips and tricks on how to improve my bookings. I’ll share more about that in a minute.
First, let’s talk about the Chinese New Year celebration. All day, there were different groups that were performing. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see much of that. The auditorium was always full. There were a few small TVs in the lobby that you could watch the performances on. There was dancing, instrumental groups, martial arts, tae kwon do, and even a little segment in which they taught a few Chinese words. In a separate building, there were booths set up to do crafts, purchase Chinese hand bags & hair bows, and you could buy an entire meal for only $5.00. I really enjoyed getting to experience a very small piece of the Chinese culture.
I got to make this Chinese paper lantern at one of the craft booths. It’s now hanging in my VIPKID classroom.
Now, back to tips and tricks to get more bookings. These are the most popular answers I’ve received:
Have a fun intro video and a profile picture that will stand out.
When the parents are looking for a teacher to book, they have over 60,000 profiles to look through. So, make your intro video fun and your profile picture catchy. Any way that you can market yourself to the parents is good.
Send your students e-cards and write thorough feedback at the end of class..
In order to get a student to rebook you, you will want to try to make connections with them. Send an e-card to let them know you enjoyed having them in class. On the feedback form, be as personal as you can be. The parents enjoy seeing the teacher’s interest in their child. When you make a connection with a student or with the parents, you will hopefully get a regular student out of it.
Overall, it was a fun and successful day. I enjoyed getting to talk to other teachers and hear about their experiences with VIPKID. It’s a great company to work for and I love that it creates opportunities for so many people. I look forward to growing in the business myself and am excited to see what 2019 holds!
