What To Do When You Aren't Getting Booked
If you haven’t read my last post on a booking frenzy and you don’t know what that means, go back and take a look! I recently learned about what a booking frenzy was. I thought I was doing everything right and had several weeks open at a time for bookings, but still wasn’t seeing much success at all.
So… why was I not getting booked?
In January, I only taught 3 classes the entire month. In February, I taught 2 classes up until last week (February 25). So, I asked some fellow teachers for tips and advice. I watched YouTube videos. I even sent in a ‘Low Booking’ ticket to the VIPKID team. After “studying up” from the videos I watched, and reading the many responses from fellow teachers and the VIPKID team, this is what I learned:
Make your teacher profile attractive.
When the parent is looking for a teacher, they have thousands of profiles to look through. (Although VIPKID gives each teacher up to five tags so teachers can search for tags such as patient, energetic, laid back, etc.) So, you want to make your profile appealing to a prospective booking parent. For your main profile picture- it should look somewhat professional, but also make it an eye-catching one. No, not one with a flashy outfit or crazy costume jewelry; however, you don’t want it to look boring. You get me? Don’t be standing in front of a plain-colored wall just getting a head shot. Sit in your classroom and take a picture of you wearing your headset. Get a picture of you sitting on your porch swing outside (and crop out just the top part of your body). Find a picture of you in a group and try cropping yourself out of it— just make sure it’s good quality. :-)
You also want your other two photos exciting too. I have one with me sitting at a coffee shop with a cute cup of coffee that’s topped with coffee art. The other one is just of me standing outside by some greenery. It’s a little more cropped because there were other people in it. But it’s great lighting!
Have a FUN and QUICK intro video.
In your intro video, use props- stuffed animals, puppets, bubbles, a silly headband, something that shows that you would be a fun teacher for their child. Also, don’t overdo your video. Make it short, sweet, and to the point, while still being peppy and full of excitement for learning!
Keep open Short Notice bookings.
If at all possible, leave open the short notice option. Plenty of parents will book their child for a class last minute. So, if you have the flexibility to do so, DO IT! … more on the SN booking coming up…
At the beginning of the week, say Monday morning when you wake up, close all your openings for the week that haven’t been booked and then reopen them. Word on the VIPKID street is that parents get notified when new slots are open. So, those short notice slots will get more attention if you close and reopen them. I started doing that just this week and have already seen great improvement in bookings. I sometimes will even close and reopen the next morning’s slots at night before I go to bed. Then, I set my alarm in the morning just to check if I have a class booked. I was unsure if this would work, but so far, I’ve woken up every morning to parents who have booked me overnight as SN.
I really hope these tips help you increase your bookings. Believe me- I’ve been there. Scratching my head wondering why everyone else seems to be getting bookings and I’m not; however, once I implemented these things, I immediately noticed an increase in bookings.
NOW… it may not be a huge difference at first. At first, I only had 2 bookings. But, this week, I woke up Monday morning to 20 bookings for the week, which is a lot more than 2.
Good luck to all my fellow teachers! I sincerely hope you see improvements if you’re currently in that boat. And, if you’re doing super well and have any other tips, drop a comment below so other teachers can see!
